TRBA is committed to carbon neutrality

TRBA wants to establish itself as a major player in the environmental transition in the construction sector in Wallonia…

To achieve this, TRBA has made the ambitious decision to aim for “CO2 performance scale 3.1” certification at level 5, the highest level.

This certification attests that TRBA s.a. meets the four criteria governing the CO2 approach:

Axis A: The census

Carbon footprint assessment is a methodology used to quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an activity. These emissions are divided into three categories, commonly referred to as “Scopes”:

  • Scope 1 covers all direct emissions resulting from the company’s internal activities.
  • Scope 2 covers indirect emissions linked to the company’s electricity consumption.
  • Scope 3 reports indirect emissions from the activities of the company’s partners (suppliers, subcontractors, etc.).

TRBA has rigorously identified all of its internal energy flows, as well as the emissions associated with its value chain partners, in order to determine its initial carbon footprint in 2023 and analyze its evolution over time.

Axis B: Reduction

TRBA aims to reduce its overall emissions by 12% by 2030. This includes a 5% reduction in Scope 1 emissions, a 50% reduction in Scope 2 emissions, and an ambitious 15% reduction in Scope 3 emissions, which account for the majority of overall emissions but over which the company has the least control. The company has also set a net zero target for 2050.
These targets are regularly reviewed in order to set new targets, if necessary, striking the right balance between ambition and realism.

To achieve its objectives, several strategies have already been put in place:

Scope 1 :

The company has begun electrifying its vehicle fleet and intends to continue this process. TRBA constantly invests in the latest generation of vehicles and machinery, at the cutting edge of energy optimization. Recently, the company has begun investing in hybrid hydraulic excavators and compactors and remains up to date with the latest innovations.

To ensure long-term performance, ongoing maintenance is carried out on the entire fleet of vehicles and machinery.

To reduce the distances traveled for the transport of materials, TRBA has strategically located its concrete plants and coating station close to the areas of high activity
of its suppliers. In the same vein, in early 2025, the company inaugurated its new POLARIS activity center located in Péruwelz, closer to its construction sites.

In addition, the logistics department takes the necessary steps to minimize the distances traveled through intelligent dispatching of machinery and personnel. Logistical alternatives and the associated organization are also put in place for the most remote construction sites (overnight stays in hotels).

TRBA is also seeking to increase the use of river transport for the supply of certain materials, taking advantage of the geographical location of four concrete plants that are ideally positioned to be supplied in this way.

The company continues to promote carpooling, eco-driving, and raising awareness among staff about unnecessary consumption.

Scope 2 :

TRBA already benefits from 100% green electricity for its fixed infrastructure, coupled with renewable energy production thanks to its photovoltaic panels. Mobile sites (construction sites and power plants) that do not always have a connection to the grid are powered by generators, which is a major area where TRBA wishes to make progress.

The company has already invested in LED lighting, motion sensors, and heating/cooling optimization to reduce its electricity consumption.

TRBA also wants to increase its own green electricity production by investing in new solar panels and wind energy.

Scope 3 :

The major emissions in this area of application mainly come from the production of concrete and asphalt, for which a detailed analysis of these value chains has been carried out. This has identified several areas for action:

  • Increase the percentage of recycled aggregates.
  • Recycle 100% of the inert waste generated by our activities.
  • Replace the most polluting materials with alternative materials.
  • Work with partners committed to environmental protection. This may also involve raising awareness, engaging and supporting our partners in this transition.

Axis C: Communication

Achieving its objectives can only be accomplished through the cooperation of all its stakeholders, both internal and external. For this reason, the company intends to inform, raise awareness, and collaborate with each player and partner in the sector so that we can progress together in our environmental approach and thus catalyze our transition.

Axis D: Participation

TRBA participates in numerous initiatives related to sustainability in our sector:

  • The CARBOC research project by Rewind Wallonia in collaboration with CTP, IPALLE, ROOSENS Béton, and ULiège.
  • The Win4Collective “BottomUp” collective research project in collaboration with CTP and CRR.
  • The Recysand research project in collaboration with CRR and CRIC.
  • Active member of the EUPAVE association.

Projects with an award advantage

Companies that hold the “CO2 performance scale” certificate may benefit from an advantage in calls for tenders. This was the case for:

  • Project “Rehabilitation of the E411 between Daussoulx and Thorembais-Saint-Trond” completed on July 1, 2025.
